Why Do I See Stars?

Floaters

Floaters are small, dark spots or lines that seem to float in front of your eyes. They are usually caused by small pieces of debris or cells that are floating in the vitreous humour, the gel-like substance that fills the back of your eye.

Floaters are usually harmless and do not require treatment.
However, if you see a sudden increase in the number of floaters or if they are accompanied by other symptoms, such as flashes of light or pain, you should see an eye doctor right away.

Vitreous Detachment

A vitreous detachment is when the vitreous humour separates from the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye. This can cause a sudden onset of floaters and flashes of light.

Vitreous detachments are usually harmless, but they can sometimes lead to retinal tears or detachment, which can be serious.
If you experience a vitreous detachment, you should see an eye doctor right away.

Retinal Detachment

A retinal detachment is when the retina separates from the back of the eye. This can cause a sudden loss of vision in the affected eye.

Retinal detachments are a medical emergency and require immediate treatment.
If you experience any sudden changes in your vision, such as a loss of vision or a curtain-like shadow, you should see an eye doctor right away.
