Marie Tharp: The Pioneer of Modern Oceanography

Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographer who revolutionized our understanding of the ocean floor. She is best known for her work with Bruce Heezen, which led to the creation of the first accurate map of the ocean floor.

Early Life and Education

Marie Tharp was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, in 1920. Her father was a geologist, and her mother was a teacher. Tharp developed an early interest in geology and oceanography, and she went on to study at the University of Michigan. She earned a bachelor’s degree in geology in 1943 and a master’s degree in 1948.

Career

After graduating from the University of Michigan, Tharp worked as a geologist for the oil industry. In 1952, she joined the Lamont Geological Observatory at Columbia University. It was at Lamont that she met Bruce Heezen, a geologist and oceanographer who was working on a project to map the ocean floor.

Tharp and Heezen began collaborating on the ocean floor mapping project in 1957. They used data from echo soundings to create a series of maps of the ocean floor. These maps revealed the presence of a vast network of underwater mountain ranges and valleys. Tharp and Heezen’s work revolutionized our understanding of the ocean floor and helped to lay the foundation for the field of modern oceanography.

In addition to her work on the ocean floor mapping project, Tharp also conducted research on the geology of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. She was the author or co-author of more than 50 scientific papers and books.

Awards and Recognition

Marie Tharp received numerous awards and recognitions for her work, including the National Medal of Science in 1997. She was also the first woman to receive the Hubbard Medal from the National Geographic Society.
