What to Do If You Find a Baby Mole

Moles are small, furry mammals that are often found in gardens and lawns. They are typically active at night and can be a nuisance to homeowners. However, if you find a baby mole, it is important to know what to do to ensure its survival.

Assessing the Situation

Determine if the mole is injured. If the mole is bleeding or has any other obvious injuries, it is important to take it to a veterinarian immediately.
Check for the mother. If the baby mole is very young, it may still be dependent on its mother. Try to locate the mother and reunite them if possible.
Consider the weather. If it is cold or rainy outside, the baby mole will need to be kept warm and dry. You can do this by placing it in a box lined with a soft cloth.

Caring for the Baby Mole

Feeding. Baby moles need to be fed every few hours. You can use a syringe to feed the mole milk replacer or kitten formula. The formula should be warmed to room temperature before feeding.
Shelter. Baby moles need a warm and dark place to sleep. You can create a nest for the mole using a small box lined with a soft cloth.
Cleaning. Baby moles need to be kept clean. You can gently wipe the mole’s body with a damp cloth. Be careful not to get water in the mole’s eyes or ears.

Releasing the Baby Mole

Once the baby mole is old enough, it will need to be released back into the wild. The best time to release the mole is in the spring or summer, when the weather is warm and there is plenty of food available.
Choose a release site that is away from predators and has plenty of vegetation. You can dig a small hole in the ground and place the mole inside. Cover the hole with soil and leave the mole alone.
Monitor the release site for a few days to make sure the mole is doing well. If you see the mole eating and moving around, then it is likely to survive on its own.
