How Was the London Tower Bridge Built?

The Need for a New Bridge
By the late 19th century, London’s rapidly growing population and expanding shipping industry necessitated a new bridge to cross the River Thames. The Design Competition
In 1876, a public competition was held to design the new bridge. The criteria specified that the bridge had to allow for both road traffic and river navigation. Over 50 designs were submitted, and the winning design was proposed by Sir John Wolfe-Barry and Sir Horace Jones.
Construction Challenges
The construction of Tower Bridge presented numerous engineering challenges. The bridge needed to be strong enough to support heavy traffic while allowing large ships to pass through. It also had to be aesthetically pleasing and blend in with the surrounding architecture.
The first challenge was to lay the foundations for the bridge’s two massive towers. These towers, each weighing over 70,000 tons, required enormous cylindrical piers to be sunk into the riverbed. Divers worked underwater, using compressed air, to clear the ground and lay the concrete foundations.
The most striking feature of Tower Bridge is its bascule bridges, which raise and lower to allow ships to pass. Each bascule, weighing over 1,000 tons, was constructed from steel plates riveted together. They were designed to open and close in just over a minute using hydraulic power.
The Gothic-style towers were built using Cornish granite and Portland stone. They were adorned with turrets and decorative elements, including the famous Victorian walkways at the top, which offered panoramic views of the city.
Completion and Legacy
The construction of Tower Bridge was completed in 1894, after eight years of hard work and ingenuity. The bridge was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales on June 30, 1894.
Today, Tower Bridge stands as a symbol of London’s architectural and engineering heritage. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in the world and continues to be a vital part of the city’s infrastructure, serving both road traffic and river navigation.
