How to Play Go Fish with 2 Players: A Step-by-Step Guide

Go Fish is a classic card game that’s perfect for 2 players of all ages. It’s a simple game to learn, but it can be challenging to master.

Materials

Standard deck of 52 cards

Setup

Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player.
Place the remaining deck face down in the center of the table.

Gameplay

The player to the left of the dealer goes first. On their turn, a player can:

Ask another player for a specific rank of card (e.g., “Do you have any aces?”).
Ask for the next card in a sequence (e.g., “Do you have the six of hearts?”).
Go fish (draw a card from the deck).

If the player asked for a specific rank of card, the other player must give them all of the cards of that rank in their hand. If the player does not have any cards of that rank, they can say “Go fish.”

If the player asked for the next card in a sequence, the other player must give them the next card in the sequence in their hand. If the player does not have the next card in the sequence, they can say “Go fish.”

If the player goes fish, they draw the top card from the deck. If the card matches a card in their hand, they can put them down in front of them.

The player keeps their turn until they run out of cards or go fish.

Winning

The game ends when one player gets rid of all of their cards. That player is the winner.

Tips

Try to remember the cards that you have played and the cards that your opponent has played.
Don’t be afraid to go fish if you think you have a chance of getting a match.
If you have a lot of cards, try to get rid of them by asking for cards in sequence.

Variations

There are many variations of Go Fish, including:

Old Maid: A joker is added to the deck and one player is dealt an extra card. The player with the Old Maid at the end of the game loses.
Go Fish with Wild Cards: Wild cards can be used to represent any card.
