What is a MAC Address?

A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique identifier assigned to every network interface controller (NIC) or Wi-Fi adapter in a device. It serves as the physical address for the device on a local area network (LAN). Each MAC address is a 12-digit hexadecimal number, typically written in the following format: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX.

How to Get Your MAC Address

Windows

Click Start > Run (or press Windows key + R).
Type “cmd” and press Enter.
In the Command Prompt window, type “getmac” and press Enter.
Your MAC address will be displayed for each network adapter installed on your computer.

macOS

Click the Apple menu > System Preferences.
Select Network.
Click on the network interface you want to get the MAC address for.
Under “Advanced,” select the “TCP/IP” tab.
The MAC address will be displayed next to “Physical Address.”

Linux

Open a terminal window.
Type “ifconfig” and press Enter.
The MAC address will be listed beside “HWaddr” for each network interface.

iOS and Android

Go to Settings.
Select Wi-Fi.
Tap on the network you are connected to.
Scroll down to “IP Address” and you will find your MAC address listed below.

Tips

If you cannot see the MAC address for your device, check the device’s documentation or contact the manufacturer for assistance.
Some devices may have multiple MAC addresses, one for each network interface available (e.g., Ethernet and Wi-Fi).
MAC addresses are case-insensitive, but sometimes they are displayed with colons (:) and sometimes with hyphens (-).
