What is a MAC Address?
A Media Access Control (MAC) address is a unique identifier assigned to every network interface controller (NIC) or Wi-Fi adapter in a device. It serves as the physical address for the device on a local area network (LAN). Each MAC address is a 12-digit hexadecimal number, typically written in the following format: XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX.

How to Get Your MAC Address
Windows
- Click Start > Run (or press Windows key + R).
- Type “cmd” and press Enter.
- In the Command Prompt window, type “getmac” and press Enter.
- Your MAC address will be displayed for each network adapter installed on your computer.
macOS
- Click the Apple menu > System Preferences.
- Select Network.
- Click on the network interface you want to get the MAC address for.
- Under “Advanced,” select the “TCP/IP” tab.
- The MAC address will be displayed next to “Physical Address.”
Linux
- Open a terminal window.
- Type “ifconfig” and press Enter.
- The MAC address will be listed beside “HWaddr” for each network interface.
iOS and Android
- Go to Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Tap on the network you are connected to.
- Scroll down to “IP Address” and you will find your MAC address listed below.
Tips
- If you cannot see the MAC address for your device, check the device’s documentation or contact the manufacturer for assistance.
- Some devices may have multiple MAC addresses, one for each network interface available (e.g., Ethernet and Wi-Fi).
- MAC addresses are case-insensitive, but sometimes they are displayed with colons (:) and sometimes with hyphens (-).
