How to Count Cells in Excel

Counting cells in Excel is a fundamental task that can help you analyze your data and make informed decisions. Whether you need to count the total number of cells in a range, the number of blank or non-blank cells, or the number of visible or filtered cells, Excel provides a range of functions and techniques to make this task easy.

Counting Total Cells

Select the range of cells you want to count.

The “Count” button will display the total number of cells in the selected range.

Counting Blank Cells

Counting Non-Blank Cells

Select the range of cells you want to count.
Use the formula COUNTIF(range, "<>").
For example, if you want to count non-blank cells in the range A1:A10, use the formula COUNTIF(A1:A10, "<>").
The formula will return the count of non-blank cells in the specified range.

Counting Visible Cells

Select the range of cells you want to count.
Click on the “Home” tab in the Excel ribbon.
In the “Editing” group, click on the “Find & Select” button.
Select “Go To Special…” from the drop-down menu.
In the “Go To Special” dialog box, select “Visible cells only” from the “Select” options.
Click “OK” to select all visible cells in the range.
The count of visible cells will be displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the Excel window.

Counting Filtered Cells

Apply a filter to the data.
Select any cell within the filtered data.
Click on the “Status” bar at the bottom of the Excel window.
The status bar will display the count of filtered cells in the range.
