Archimedes’ Contributions to Mathematics
Archimedes was one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He made significant contributions to many areas of mathematics, including geometry, calculus, and number theory. His work laid the foundation for much of the mathematics that is used today.
Geometry
- Developed the method of exhaustion to calculate the area of a circle.
- Proved that the volume of a sphere is two-thirds the volume of the cylinder that circumscribes it.

Number theory
- Proved that the square root of 2 is irrational.
- Developed a method for finding prime numbers.
- Invented the sieve of Eratosthenes.
