Archimedes’ Contributions to Mathematics

Archimedes was one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He made significant contributions to many areas of mathematics, including geometry, calculus, and number theory. His work laid the foundation for much of the mathematics that is used today.

Developed the method of exhaustion to calculate the area of a circle.
Proved that the volume of a sphere is two-thirds the volume of the cylinder that circumscribes it.

Used his method of exhaustion to calculate the volume of a solid of revolution.

Number theory

Proved that the square root of 2 is irrational.
Developed a method for finding prime numbers.
Invented the sieve of Eratosthenes.

Archimedes’ work had a profound impact on the development of mathematics. His methods and discoveries are still used today by mathematicians and scientists around the world.
