Who is Castro?

## Early Life and Education
Fidel Castro Ruz was born on August 13, 1926, in Birán, Cuba. He came from a wealthy family of Spanish and Afro-Cuban descent. Castro received a Jesuit education and studied law at the University of Havana.

## Political Involvement
Castro began his political activism as a student leader, opposing the U.S.-aligned dictator Fulgencio Batista. In 1953, he led an unsuccessful assault on the Moncada Barracks, which marked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.

## Cuban Revolution and Rise to Power
After a failed attempt at guerrilla warfare, Castro and his followers established a base in the Sierra Maestra mountains. With the support of the Cuban people, they waged a successful rebellion against Batista’s regime. On January 1, 1959, Castro’s forces entered Havana, and he became the Prime Minister of Cuba.

## Socialist Cuba
Castro established a socialist state in Cuba, nationalizing key industries and implementing social programs such as healthcare and education for all Cubans. He also aligned Cuba with the Soviet Union in the Cold War, leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

## Cold War and U.S. Embargo
Castro’s Soviet alliance and his support for communist revolutions abroad made him a target of U.S. hostility. The United States imposed a trade embargo on Cuba, which has been in effect for over six decades.

## Cuba under Castro
Under Castro’s rule, Cuba made significant progress in social and economic development. However, his authoritarian regime and suppression of political dissent drew criticism from both domestic and international human rights groups.

## Later Years and Death
In 2008, Castro stepped down as president due to health concerns. His brother, Raúl Castro, succeeded him and implemented some economic reforms. Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90.

Fidel Castro remains a controversial figure. Some view him as a revolutionary hero who brought social justice to Cuba, while others criticize his authoritarian rule and human rights violations.
