Who is Katie Hill?
Katie Hill is a former Democratic U.S. Representative for California’s 25th congressional district. She served from 2019 until her resignation in 2020. Hill was the first openly bisexual member of Congress.
Early life and career
Hill was born in Abilene, Texas, in 1987. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Pepperdine University and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Southern California. Before entering politics, Hill worked as a homelessness advocate and a community organizer.
Political career
Hill was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018, defeating Republican incumbent Steve Knight. She was the first Democrat to represent the 25th congressional district since 1993.
As a member of Congress, Hill served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. She was a vocal advocate for progressive causes, including gun control, affordable healthcare, and environmental protection.
Resignation
In 2020, Hill resigned from Congress after the House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer. Hill denied the allegations, but said she was resigning to avoid further disruption to her family and staff.
Personal life
Hill is married to Ken Duken, a former federal prosecutor. They have two children.
