Cabeza de Vaca: Best Known For

Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who is best known for his expeditions in the New World, his exploration of Texas, and his account of his travels, which became a classic of Spanish literature.

Early Life and Career

Cabeza de Vaca was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain, in 1490. He was the son of a nobleman, and he received a good education. In 1514, he sailed to the New World with the expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez. The expedition landed in Florida, but it was soon shipwrecked. Cabeza de Vaca and a few other survivors managed to reach the coast of Texas.

Exploration of Texas

Cabeza de Vaca and his companions spent the next eight years exploring Texas. They lived among the Native American tribes of the region, and they learned their customs and languages. In 1528, Cabeza de Vaca and his companions finally reached Mexico City. They were the first Europeans to cross the continent of North America.

Account of His Travels

In 1542, Cabeza de Vaca published an account of his travels, entitled Relación. The book was a bestseller, and it was translated into several languages. Cabeza de Vaca’s account is a valuable source of information about the Native American tribes of Texas and the early history of the region.

Later Life

After his return to Spain, Cabeza de Vaca was appointed governor of the Rio de la Plata region in South America. He served in this position for several years, but he was eventually replaced by a rival. Cabeza de Vaca returned to Spain in 1556, and he died in Seville in 1557.
